Who and Where

Eve, Ollie and little Finn would like to welcome you to their beautiful mixed smallholding. Situated on 29 acres of land at the top of the Otter Vale Valley, Higher Moorlands Farm is a mixture of permanent pasture and wet woodland, which is totally untouched and full of wildlife. We are part of the Mid-tier Stewardship programme; conservation and working in harmony with nature underpins everything that we do here – from planting new hedges for increased biodiversity to allowing parts of the farm to rewild.

We use livestock to manage our pastures and during the summer you can see the sheep and cattle roaming the fields. We also have free range pigs, chickens and ducks.

The farm is situated in the Blackdown Hills in East Devon, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Luppitt, just a 25 minute drive from the Jurassic coastline.

The area is rich in wildlife and heritage, a beautiful landscape with hedgerows and copses, small farms with intricate field patterns, deep valleys and narrow, winding lanes. Our farm is a short distance from two hillforts; Dumpton Hill and Hembury Hillfort and our fields overlook Hartridge Common where conservation efforts are ongoing to restore diverse wildflower meadows.

Camping and Field hire

Find us on cool camping or facebook.

We run a small, relaxed campsite during the summer.  Designated camping pitches are dotted throughout our hay field, with far reaching views overlooking the beautiful Hartridge Common. Each pitch is clearly numbered and has its own fire pit, the pitches are well spaced out. The site is simple with basic facilities; there are compost toilets and free hot showers.

Please keep fires to designated pits. We have firewood and kindling for sale or you can bring your own. We recommend bringing a small axe for splitting wood. These fields are grazed the rest of the year so we ask that you don’t burn anything with nails in it or that’s been treated or painted and that you make sure to abide by a leave no trace ethos.

We have a small shop where you can stock up on local produce, for anything else you can walk, cycle or drive to the Dunkerswell village shop 3 miles away. There are two great local pubs both a 10 minute drive away and plenty of nice places to eat out in Honiton should you want to.
With plenty of footpaths and cycle routes easily accessible and the Jurassic coast just a 25 minute drive from the farm you will have plenty of options to enjoy during your stay here.

RUBBISH AND RECYCLING

You can leave your sorted, clean recycling here with us but please take all landfill rubbish with you and remember to leave no trace.

COMPOST TOILET AND SHOWER

We have compost toilets for your use and will provide toilet paper, if you’ve never used a compost loo before you can find an explanation of how they work inside. There is a shower unit with hot showers available for your use.

DOGS

We welcome well behaved dogs, but please be aware that they must be kept on a lead and under control at all times. Not everyone likes dogs and we have all sorts of livestock on the farm. We expect you to clear up any dog poo and take it away with you, please do not pick it up in a plastic bag and hang it in a tree.

NOISE

We want to create a peaceful and quiet campsite, but we also realise that groups of friends will be coming and camping together, and might want to stay up late chatting by the fire. Please be respectful of your neighbouring campers and try not to disturb the peace and quiet in the evenings and at night, this is a family campsite. No amplified music please, that includes all speakers even tiny little ones.

PRIVATE AREAS

Please be aware that this is a working farm that is home to a couple of families, all areas outside of the camping area are private and off limits to campers and their children. If you need to get hold of us, please call us and we’ll come find you as soon as we can.

FIELD HIRE

Our fields are also available to hire for small one off events. Please get in touch to discuss this further with us.

CANCELLATION POLICY

If a cancellation is made less than 2 weeks before your stay then no refund is given.

PRODUCE

CHICKEN

We buy in day old Hubbard chicks and raise them on organic feed. They are moved around our fields every other day so they get access to fresh pasture to scratch around for insects. Due to their varied diet, slower growth rate and freedom to roam around outside all day these chickens have a huge amount of flavour and are a cut above anything you can buy in the shops.

PORK

Pigs

Our pigs are free range and are raised on a diet of UK grown peas and barley and scraps from the market garden. We choose slow growing breeds that have amazing flavour and good marbling. All our butchery is done locally and we make our sausages ourselves using natural casings, organic oats and just salt and spices for flavouring – nothing else. You can buy individual cuts or we also offer pork boxes. Please email us for a full price list

LAMB

Lamb

We have a small flock of sheep that we use to manage our pastures in rotation with our cattle. We allow our lambs to reach one year of age (they are then called Hoggit) as we find the meat to have a much better texture and flavour once the animal has had a full year to grow and mature. You can buy individual cuts or we also offer lamb boxes. Please email us for a full price list

BEEF

Cows

Our cattle are 100% grass fed and spend most of the year outside grazing our fields. During the winter months they come into the barns to give the grass a rest and happily eat hay and build up a lovely bed of dung and straw, which in turn is used to bring fertility to our market garden.
We hang our beef for 28 days to develop a good flavour. You can buy individual cuts or we also offer beef boxes. Please email us for a full price list
